OUR PURPOSE

The St. Louis Eclipse 2017 Task Force was formed late in 2014 to help the St. Louis regional area get ready for the August 21, 2017 eclipse. The task force was a collaboration of St. Louis area organizations that included amateur astronomy societies, civic and educational institutions and local businesses. All of our task force members were unpaid volunteers.

Our task force goals were three-fold:

  • Inspire the St. Louis community about the August 21, 2017 eclipse.  We were excited about this unique opportunity brought to us by nature and wanted to get everyone else excited too!
  • Educate the St. Louis community about the unique science, economic and personal viewing opportunities related to the eclipse.
  • Connect local entities to the significant number of eclipse related resources that were available. The task force's connection with a number of local and national resources placed us in a unique position to help our local community.

Notably, the St. Louis Task Force goals did not include arranging specific eclipse viewing events for individuals or organizations.   Many of our task force members were astronomer enthusiasts taking advantage of this once-in-a-life time experience for personal eclipse viewing.

OUR PEOPLE

The St. Louis Eclipse Task Force was supported by a collaboration of St. Louis area organizations and out-of-area advisors that included amateur astronomy societies, civic and educational institutions and local businesses.   More than 160 supporting organizations were involved with the St. Louis Eclipse 2017 project.  Most of the volunteers are directly involved in the planning of eclipse related events for their respective organization(s).  All counties within the Greater St. Louis Metropolitan area were represented.
